Medical Care

Health Care

The Ministry of Health comprises 9 objectives:

• Promote personal health of every Botswana for wholesome living
• Improve environmental health within the country since individual health is often an outcome of the environment within which the individual, the family and the community live
• Prevent and guard against the introduction of diseases that may come from outside the country
• Prevent and control the outbreak and spread of spread of communicable diseases within the country
• Provide effective treatment, using appropriate technology (simple and cost saving and within the scope of national capabilities) to those afflicted by ill health
• Advise, assist and supervise local authorities in regard to matters affecting public health
• Promote and carry out research and investigation in connection with the prevention and treatment of human diseases as well as control and improvement of environmental health
• Provide treatment and care to physically and mentally handicapped and disabled and services for their rehabilitation
• Develop health service related technical and professional manpower resources to cope with the current requirements and future development needs

In order to achieve its national objectives, the Ministry of Health is responsible for the following functions:

• Develop and implement National Health Policies and Strategies
• Health Promotion and Ill Health Prevention
• Provide Health Care Curative Services
• Health Research Investigative and Technical Support Services
• Health Manpower Development and Utilisation
• Health Care Administration

Adult Education

Most of the Botswana returnees are employed either by Botswana Government or Parastatal organizations or private companies. Most if not all of them have minimum academic qualifications (Diploma or First Degree).

There are several institutions where they could advance their academic training, some of these are:

The University of Botswana (UB)

Unfortunately there is only one University in the country, but there is a second thought about setting up the other university. Education at the university is mainly sponsored by the government. Of course the university offers evening/part time courses as well which are normally self sponsored or by private companies.

The fees according to the 2003/2004 Calendar, these are fees for residents:

Duration

Most of the university courses run for 4 – 5 years for degree level, 2 years for a full time Diploma and the 3 years for the certificate and diploma part time courses.

Institute of Development Management (IDM) offers as well variety of courses at different levels. This institute is government aided.

It is targeted for middle and senior personnel in any organisation and its duration is normally 22 weeks.

NIIT, Gaborone Institute of Professional Studies (GIPS)
Damelin, Institute of Development Management (IDM)

NIIT, Damelin and Gaborone Institute of Professional Studies are some of the private training institutions in Botswana.

These institutions offer computer studies, accounting, tourism, catering, secretarial and management courses. They are internationally recognised. The fees starts from a minimum of P 3,000, for example A Plus computer course at NIIT.

Further Education

Institute of Development Management (IDM)

The Institute of Development Management (IDM) was established in 1974 as a regional organisation in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (BLS) countries to help meet the management needs of the Region through management development activities including training, consultancy, research, and the establishment of a management Resource Centre. Some of its objectives are:

• To extend public awareness of, and encourage, public involvement in all aspects of development
• To provide management training and consultancy to middle and senior level personnel in the public, parastatal and private sectors
• To improve organisational structures, administrative and management procedures and development policies related to social and economic needs etc.
