Most of the Botswana returnees are employed either by Botswana Government or Parastatal organizations or private companies. Most if not all of them have minimum academic qualifications (Diploma or First Degree).

There are several institutions where they could advance their academic training, some of these are:

The University of Botswana (UB)

Unfortunately there is only one University in the country, but there is a second thought about setting up the other university. Education at the university is mainly sponsored by the government. Of course the university offers evening/part time courses as well which are normally self sponsored or by private companies.

University of Botswana offers many courses on full and part time basis, from certificates, Diploma, first degree to Masters Degrees.

The fees according to the 2003/2004 Calendar, these are fees for residents:

Most of the university courses run for 4 – 5 years for degree level, 2 years for a full time Diploma and the 3 years for the certificate and diploma part time courses.

Institute of Development Management (IDM)

Institute of Development Management is committed to enabling people and organisations to continuously achieve excellence by offering globally and locally tailored management training and consultancy services that meet the targeted needs and go beyond expectations. Institute of Development Management (IDM) offers as well variety of courses at different levels. This institute is government aided.

Courses offered

Public Administration (Certificate)

This course is divided into three parts:

Part I
Introduction to Public Administration and Management, Information Management, Local Government Administration and Management, Principle of economics, and Communication skills

Project: Internship
Fees: BWP 2,090

Part II
Principles of Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Constitutional & Administrative law, Records Management and Public Finance and Accounting
Fees: BWP 4,690
It is targeted for middle and senior personnel in any organisation and its duration is normally 22 weeks.

All these Institute of Development Management courses mentioned above are broken down into small categories and they vary in duration. For example: Human and General Resource Management

NIIT, Gaborone Institute of Professional Studies (GIPS)
Damelin, Institute of Development Management (IDM)

NIIT, Damelin and Gaborone Institute of Professional Studies are some of the private training institutions in Botswana.

These institutions offer computer studies, accounting, tourism, catering, secretarial and management courses. They are internationally recognised. The fees starts from a minimum of P 3,000, for example A Plus computer course at NIIT.

The Institute of Development Management (IDM) was established in 1974 as a regional organisation in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (BLS) countries to help meet the management needs of the Region through management development activities including training, consultancy, research, and the establishment of a management Resource Centre.
